Trekkies 2: The Official Soundtrack

Even as a lifelong, unashamed Star Trek dork, I will admit that going in the prospect of Trekkies 2: The Official Soundtrack had me raising my eyebrow in a bemused, Spock-like fashion. A collection of music composed and performed by Star Trek tribute bands is likely to be either an instant camp classic - ala William Shatner’s The Transformed Man album - or the most grimly pathetic thing in this or any other galaxy. Well, I’m happy to report that this is a fun, surprisingly eclectic CD featuring everything from B52’s frontman Fred Schneider’s “Beam Me Up,” to Stovokor’s absurdly enthusiastic Klingon metal (today is a good day to thrash!), to Warp 11’s bouncy, KROQ-ready “Everything I Do, I Do with William Shatner.” (“I don’t wanna go to work/Just want to hang with Captain Kirk/And if I had my way I’d make it so.”) There’s freaky bluegrass stuff, sloppy punk, opera, and Q knows what else, interspersed with clips where former Next Generation star Denise Crosby tactfully interviews Trek lunatics around the globe. Thank God these people have a sense of humor. You don’t really need to have seen the documentary to enjoy the album; this crap is funny even if you know only the Trek basics, but even funnier if you know way too much about all things Roddenberry. After a listen or two you’ll have heard it enough, but that first listen will blast you into hyperspace. It is, as Spock would say, “Fascinating.”
